Did you have any issues when testing newer versions? So far, looks like 3.4, 3.5, and 3.6 shouldn't have any issues.

I updated to 3.6 yesterday and have not noticed any issue other then https://www.drupal.org/project/uswds_base/issues/3350727 🐛 "MENU" Button Not Displaying on Mobile Fixed

I know you’ve heard it plenty… but I want to keep things basic enough for uswds_base versions to be more like a recommended bottom version. Not a hard line of… you can only use this theme version with this Uswds version. Especially with how they release now with uswds 3.x… That way sites can upgrade minor versions faster as long as they test out fine on your own end.

Think that would be better then trying to do releases per uswds release.

May also be worth it to start a uswds or uswds_base slack channel.
