The models are supposed to be imported in test sites with no content. Unfortunately, the config import loads node types such that the previously existing type get replaced with the new one, although the ID is the same. Replacing an existing node type is only possible if there are no entities/nodes of that type available. I am uncertain if we can change the import such that this limitation would disappear.
For now, you can always import such models into new Drupal installations that don't have content yet, or you delete existing content before importing such a model.

Thanks @adam_b for your feedback. I've added a task to the Documenation Kanban Board to add some instructions to the library about this issue.
