Errors on batch processing on Acquia environment

Problem/Motivation

When advanced aggregation is enabled, batch processes fail on Acquia environments.
We have not been able to reproduce this in a local development environment, but it is affecting our Acquia environments.

Steps to reproduce

1. enable advagg and advagg_mod
2. enable modules that trigger batch processes - in our case we have observed this with Feeds → and Views Data Export →
3. trigger a batch process, e.g. import a feed or export views data

Expected result

The batch process should progress

Actual result

The batch process screen displays without any theming applied, and does not progress.
If the user refreshes the page, the progress indicator moves on, but the process fails
