smtp debug displays momentarily, too quick to see, needs to stay on screen

I set smtp debug to on, on smtp module config page.

I enter a test email

click save

then some smtp debug statements momentarily show before the config page reloads and they are not displayed

as above

make them stay on the page

as above

change ui to keep debug statements on page
