Required Flexfield Items in multivalue field makes adding a value mandatory on every form submit

Problem/Motivation

My Flexfield is not required, but (some or all of) its items ("subfields") are.
Unfortunately this makes adding an instance of the flexfield mandatory on the form (while it's not required):
