CKEditor 5 issue with "<span class>"

I recently upgraded a D9 site to D10, and am trying to move from the contributed ckeditor 4 module, to the core ckeditor 5 module. When I change the editor of a text format from Ckeditor to Ckeditor 5, I get the following error message:

The Material Icons plugin needs another plugin to create <span>, for it to be able to create the following attributes: <span class>. Enable a plugin that supports creating this tag. If none exists, you can configure the Source Editing plugin to support it.

If I manually enter "<span class>" under "Source editing", I get another error:

The following attribute(s) are already supported by enabled plugins and should not be added to the Source Editing "Manually editable HTML tags" field: Material Icons (<span class>).

It seems that the two contradict each other?
