Finding the correct state ID fails

I experienced that my logs kept filling up with warnings about nodes that could not be (un)published.
They had been unpublished, but it appears that the module could not figure that out, as it was trying to match on a state of null.

I've created a patch to dynamically look up the correct state id, for either published or unpublished situation.
