Looking for Alpha tester for future functionality

Purpose

In order to test the current and future functionality of the Automatic Updates module we are looking for a limited number of early testers of this module.

What we will offer

If needed, the team helping the testers will provide assistance setting up Automatic Updates on your hosting (if it meets the basic hosting requirements). We will also help you restore your site from your backup if there is a problem with an update.

What we are looking for in testers

  1. Not mission critical sites: Since you will be testing an Alpha module there is always a chance that something could go wrong. Please don’t use a site where this is not acceptable.
  2. Real sites: Ideally we would like to find users with existing sites that were not made just to run this test. To make sure there is the potential for regular updates the site should have at least a few contrib modules.
  3. Must have periodic backups: Since the updates will happen during cron you will not get a chance to run a backup directly before the update. Given that something could always go wrong during an update your site code and database should be backed up regularly (at least daily). Our team will not assist trying to restore sites that were not backed up.
  4. Meets basic hosting requirements: The Automatic Update is not compatible with all hosting. 
    1. The site's codebase needs to be writable either by the web server or by a server cron job that can be set up to run drush cron.
    2. Lower price hosting such as Godaddy or Bluehost should be compatible, though part of this testing will be to confirm that and we can help you determine if your hosting is compatible.
    3. Customized hosting, such as Docker containers, should easily be able to be configured to be compatible with the module.
    4. Hosting that write protects the production code base, such as Acquia, Pantheon and Platform.sh are not compatible for this testing.
  5. Willing to check their sites are updates: Testers should be able to manually check their sites after they receive an email that their site has been updated to make sure everything looks ok.

Scope of testing

  1. The testing will use the Alpha versions of 3.0.x of this module. The first alpha versions of 3.0.x will be release before the testing begins
  2. Drupal 10 only: the 3.0.x version of this module is only compatible with Drupal 10.
  3. Cron (unattended) Updates for Drupal core: This functionality is currently part of the main Automatic Updates module
  4. Cron Updates of Contributed modules: This functionality will be added to the Automatic Updates Extensions module. A “deny list” can be set up for each site to exclude certain modules the site owner does not want to update automatically (to accommodate those who are interested in testing but know of a few modules that they have bad past update experiences with).
  5. Patch level updates only: Both Drupal core and Contrib updates that happen during cron will only be for patch level updates. The module provides forms to update both Drupal core and modules for minor level updates.
