API for other modules to add their own support

Problem/Motivation

This module provides a very interesting user experience. Unfortunately, only certain fields are supported. As the maintainer of the Smart Date module, I would like for this unsupported field to provide its own support for this module.

Proposed resolution

Create and document an API that would allow modules that provide their own fields to provide their own support for this module,
