From our own experience, this could probably be done with the ECA Form sub-module by setting the states attributes accordingly. But we don't really recommend it and don't use it ourselves.
Compared to the UI of the conditional_fields module, this is so much more tailored towards the task to set conditions and states for fields in forms, that we encourage the usage of that module. We had thought about improved support for this in ECA, but that would mainly rebuild functionality, which is already there so that there is no reason to do so.

Thank you @jurgenhaas for the clarification. conditional_fields sure does a good job and it is quite mature, I am continuing with it.
