You are right, technically the equivalent would be ::accessCheck(TRUE) but at this point in time I don't believe that's relevant. This update function is really old, was introduced several years ago, and I honestly don't believe there are sites out there still in 1.x. We should probably have a clean-up task to remove cruft code that is no longer needed. But for now this is good enough to keep the linters happy.
