Use as form element

Is possible to set material icons as a field type for a form element? I'm trying to add a field to a form using hook_form_alter.

I tried to set "material_icons" as #type, but it doesn't work because of there is not a material_icons form element. Is there a way to implement it?

It probably wouldn't be too difficult. The field formatter contains everything you'd need so it could just be converted to an Element instead. If I get some time I'll take a look, but PR's more than welcome :)
