Field placeholder and default value are unsupported

Problem/Motivation

I would like to use a placeholder to show the suggested sematics for my field but it doesn't show up in the form.
Also, if the field is not required, why can't I set its default value?
Field validation happens during form submission anyway..

I submitted this as a bug report since placeholder text and default value are Drupal's core features.
