Unable to get the current language in the route.

Yes, the module works properly with URL based language negotiation configuration only at the moment.

We probably need to add hook_requirement for a runtime phase to check if the Drupal project has configured the negotiation pipeline, which includes the URL-based step.
And as soon as the module support other negotiation methods, we will remove the requirement.
