It would probably require a lot of refactoring and a new major release. If you want to make a patch for these changes, please post here and I can certainly review.

I would probably recommend the Maxlength module for this, if you really need this functionality: https://www.drupal.org/project/maxlength → . Plus, it has more features and support.

Please see latest changes in dev branch. This should now work on basic text and textarea fields within a Paragraph.
