Migrate to CKEditor 5 for Drupal 9.4+ / Drupal 10

Created on 16 November 2022, almost 2 years ago
Updated 2 April 2024, 8 months ago

Problem/Motivation

CKEditor 5 was added to core in 9.3. This is going to be the new WYSIWYG editor in D10 and CKEditor 4 is being removed. Because CKEditor 5 was a ground-up rewrite all plugins must also be rewritten.

Proposed resolution

I think we should consider using a custom block widget to implement this functionality for CKEditor 5.

Is it possible to support both CKEditor 4 and 5 within the same module version? I see now there's a 3.x and 4.x version that both support Drupal 10, but support ckeditor versions separately. Is there any reason we couldn't have both ckeditor versions working in the same version?

CKeditor 4 is deprecated and soon will not be secure (no updates are coming any time soon).
    Drupal 9 has been deprecated.
Drupal 10 only includes CKEditor 5.

There should not be support for CKEditor 4 in the new version, only CKEditor 5.

Version 2.0.1 is no longer supported nor recommended; and version 4.0.0-alpha2 does include CKEditor 5 support.

I would recommend upgrading from version 2.0.1 to 4.0.0-alpha2 or higher.
