Problem/Motivation

Modifying patterns generates an error message "An illegal choice has been detected." There was no information provided about what the illegal choice was.

Steps to reproduce

I used SimplyTest.me to test without any of the other contributed modules I'm using to rule out the possibility of conflicts. That's when I discovered that the illegal choice error message was connected to the "Character Case" option, which I had left blank.

The field is marked in red when the administration theme is Claro (simplytest.me). However, it is not highlighted when using Seven 9.4.8 as the administration theme (my own site).

Proposed resolution

While red/not red is likely an issue with the theme, it might be a good idea to add a notation to the UI for auto_username indicating that "Character Case" is a required field.
