Call to undefined function variable_get() in _popup_block_settings()

I am getting this error when I try to enable the Popup block module. The site crashes when we try to enable it.

Call to undefined function variable_get() in _popup_block_settings() (line 210 of modules/contrib/popup/modules/popup_block/popup_block.module).

Please advice.
