Enable multi-value media reference image fields to be displayed in a colorbox gallery with only a single value/image displayed in content

Currently there is no way to display a multi-value media reference image field in a colorbox gallery without displaying all of its values in the non-colorbox display. The proposal is to enable this with only one, typically the first, value displayed. This would be identical to how a multi-valued image field is displayed in a colorbox gallery with the settings

Image style for content: Hide (do not display image)
Image style for first image in content: Medium (220x220) or any other image style
Image style for Colorbox: None (original image) or any other image style
Gallery (image grouping): Per post gallery

    I also need this and can confirm that this was a basic feature in D7 that is now broken in D10.

    As I have no idea about the code - may the maintainer re-implement this soon, please?

    Looks more like a config issue / usability issue.

    Setting:
    Image style for content: Hide (do not display image)
    Image style for first image in content: 640x640

    And all content images are hidden, but the first is shown.
