I am still trying to disable even simple messages but with no joy.

There is absolutely no effect, the original message just appears as it did?

in Messages to be disabled field. I think it is not working for you because the administrator role has Exclude from message filtering permission by default with installation.So please try the debug option Ignore the exclude role permission to check with Administrator role users.
