The open WIP PR points to #3232848: Replace Swift Mailer (EOL) with Symfony Mailer. → so closing this one as a duplicate.
swiftmailer is outdated and thus can be marked as unsupported anytime. Thus its successor symfony_mailer → should be used.
Symfony mailer is currently in development so we might require a plan to switch to this new module.
This also means the dependent mailsystem (dependent module of swiftmailer) to be uninstalled as well.
