The documentation has been updated to emphasize the need for the Private folder as upload destination. I confirm that on Drupal 9 when following all the steps the module works as designed
The module block does not show any downloads. I have tried the field formatter set to "File with Download Statistics recorded" on the media entity and the view, in all combinations. No results... does this work for logged in users as well? (on my project users need to be logged in in order to download files...)
