Set the widget in form mode to address js geocode and in that widget settings set the
geofield field target (add the field machine name)
how to configure it at all, or is it a bug?

It's likely this issue predates Contrib.social: some issue and comment data are missing.
Too late but is a bug. It needs geofield map field to be there.
