In the Search API module, starting with version 8.x-1.18, there were quite a few code changes that are not compatible with. the current version of this module. Some methods were (re)moved like the ContentEntity::filterValidItemIds(), and when adding/updating nodes we started to get fatal errors.
Use this module with any Search API module version newer or equal to than 8.x-1.18.
