Not working with entity_reference_autocomplete

I believe there are cases that changing the #type to container breaks things. So added a check and full testing and this should be good now in 3.x. Thanks for the report and patch.

Really commit does a bit more - full support for media entity reference fields as well for example - but just all the fixes that came out of actually having automated tests.
