overrides by view and display

I'm trying to find a way to override colors for a billboardjs chart by view and display. The charts_override module readme shows an example by route, but I haven't been successful trying to access the view object in there. Any hints/pointers would be much appreciated and I can create a doc page for it once I figure it out.
