units of measurement default selections

Is there any way for a user to set either imperial or metric as their preferred unit of measurement or have it set though the locale?
Can field values be converted from one unit to another depending on a users settings?

Changed this into a Feature request as I don't think, there's an option for this yet. Should it be a central configuration option or is it locale- or user-specific?

Unsure if it's worth it then and maybe needs to prepare a MR for it ... seems to be quite rare requirement?
