Add Remote audio media source/type to Core Media

Problem/Motivation

IMO...

  • The ability to easily add Remote audio is equally as important as the current ability to easily add remote video.
  • The ability to easily add Remote audio falls in line with the easy out of the box initiative. I'm not a Wordpress user, but WP does this well.
  • The ability to easily add Remote audio can significantly reduce the overall size of the files folder, which is always a win.
  • The number of contributed modules attempting to solve this problem in various ways indicates there is a real need for remote audio.

Over in issue #2998713: Add a media source for remotely hosted files → there is discussion on a feature request centered around "the possibilities of having Remote Image, File & Audio media support" [in core], but this issue is specifically a feature request to add a Remote audio oembed media source/type to core, which handles SoundCloud (maybe others) out-of-the-box.

    Media Remote Audio (oEmbed) → now has ~400 site installs, so there does seems to be an out-of-the-box need for "Remote Audio", especially for site builders who may not be comfortable leveraging hook_media_source_info_alter(). However, it probably does not meet the "80% use case" gate, so even though I submitted the idea, it's probably best to close as "Won't fix" unless the community has strong opinions otherwise.

    Closing based on the recommendation of OP. I can see the module usage has gone up modestly to 543 in just more than a year. Anecdotally, I have only ever needed this once or twice myself so my experience tracks with the data.

    Something for Starshot to consider though :)
