I believe these changes are in the 7.x version so please try the new release for that one. The key module has been integrated in 8.x branch

I've tested and patched this module with the latest stable release of Elasticsearch Connector ("7.0-alpha2" at the time of writing) to support the latest ES version in AWS (7.1). It looks like all that needs to be done is to upgrade the jsq/amazon-es-php dependency to 0.3.0.
Also, this module should probably adopt a similar approach to the S3FS module and allow handling of AWS keys / secrets in Drupal settings. That way a secrets.settings.php file outside the docroot can be used to pick up credentials for authenticating with AWS.
