Data export display not taking any parameters from display it's attached to

I'm not sure if this is a bug report or a support request, but I have a hard time believing that this module isn't working for anyone in the way it's supposed to, so I'm assuming I'm doing something wrong.

I've followed the steps in the readme and looked at several tutorials on how to set this module up in case I'm missing something, but if so I can't figure out for the life of me what it is. Simply, the data export is not limited in any way by the display it's attached to. It's not limited by the content type filter - it's displaying all the content on the site. It doesn't take any exposed filter parameters from the parent display. It does create a CSV, and I can download the file no problem, but no matter what I do, it returns all site content.

I thought maybe it was an issue with the view - better exposed filters, exposed filter in block, tabbed view, Ajax - I've tried removing all of those variables with no change. I created a totally stripped-down view with just a page display and data export with almost no configuration whatsoever and am still getting the same result. I've tried various configurations of paths and filenames for the export display, no luck.

I also tried attaching a data export display to the admin user view and it behaved similarly to the content export - returned all users, regardless of filters on the parent display.

I really need this module to work so am hoping someone can get back to me with some pointers. Thanks in advance.

I tried for way too long to manually make things match up for this to work as expected, but simply recreating it using the "Duplicate as Data Export" option was all it took. Not sure what had gotten messed up under the hood for it to stop working, but thanks for the tip @tce!

@tce thank you, you saved my day (and my sanity :D) !

'duplicate as data export' was the only way how to get it work

Glad you all seemed to arrive at a working solution.

VDE displays are like any other views displays in that they are going to use their own filters or inherit filters from the default display.

I wonder if we should have a follow-up for having something in the UI that warns site builders if they've changed the filters on a display from the displays that they've attached the Export display to, that might be helpful and might have pointed you in the right direction in this case.

Apologies that the documentation on drupal.org is massively out of date.
