The problem with using the same image for the square teaser images and the fuill content image, is that most of the times the result of one of the two is not suitable for use because of the difference in dimensions. but especially because the background image of full content is often just a background image (i.e. a landscape) while the teaser image is often used to identify the content. This is especially the case with groups. Groups often represent a team with their own icon or logo. This icon or logo will not display well as background of the full content.
The solution is to use the same approach as the profile: use two image fields (profile image vs background image of profile)
