I'm not to willing to add a non stable module as dependency. Whenever the module is stable, I'm happy to review a new patch, as the current one is not completely correct and needs to be for the 2.0.x branch.
To better integrate with Drupal's contrib ecosystem, the module could easily relegate some functionality to existing projects. There is no point in having functionality duplicated in several modules, and in the long run it would severely degrade the contrib ecosystem.
One example would be the Flags module → . Let's just integrate with Flags module, if installed, and otherwise show the country name.
