This can be closed as a duplicate now, updating the cache tags was always the answer.
In our use case we use environment indicator on a multi-server setup:
We would like to have the environment_indicator theme show us the server's host name to track on which server the request got handled.
This is currently not feasible since the theme output of environment_indicator gets cached.
Therefore I propose to disable caching for environment_indicator theme output.
