I've come across this situation, where the crop box seemed to be stuck at a size smaller than the image and I couldn't resize it to envelop more.
Turns out the cropper worked fine, I just thought the image was taller, because it had a transparent background and blended into the background of the widget. (see attached screenshot, crop box indicates actual image height)
I thought it would be useful to indicate the actual image size with the help of background colors and maybe add a light border too.
It is quite common to use a gray checkered background for images with transparency, while the area outside the image could remain as it is now.
