How to add a custom class to Term Links

I tried to add a custom class to the output rendered in cctags-term.tpl.php by overriding the function template_preprocess_cctags_term in cctags.module in a custom module. The override works but the $variables['term'] received by the custom module is not an object so none of the code in that function executes. I just want to add a class to the ['attributes_array']['class'] array set up in that function. Any help is appreciated.
