I just tried installing this and couldn't get it to work.
After installing and enabling (via Composer) ver. 1.8, I went to Structure->MediaTypes->Image, and added SVG to the image field settings.. Cleared caches. Tried to add an SVG image to a component, and got the "only these formats are allowed" error.
This is a site that has GD2 image manipulation toolkit (not ImageMagick). Could this be the reason? I only thought of this, because I was also looking at SVG_formatter on a site with ImageMagick (very nearly the only difference in sites) and it works fine..(I did go into ImageMagick settings and set SVG to "true" as an extra step..). There is no such configuration for GD2.
I do see where there are options added to the image field widgets, but the extension is still disallowed...?
