This was fixed quite some time ago in #2561411: Avoid Duplicate references → . The 1.x branch is no longer supported.
Having a list of entities already selected and when using the append mode, if I add items that already are in the existing selection it will result in duplicated values.
Seems that Drupal.entityBrowser.updateEntityIds is not dealing with that possibility.
