page_variant entity type does not exist when installing or enabling

Hi together,

I can´t install/enable page_manager 8x.4.-
After update D8 core to version 3.x. and naively updating panels to v. 4.x., as well as updating panelizer, my site got messed up (wsod).
After realizing that panels4 needs layout_discovery instead of layout_plugin, I got panels4 and the site back running (by losing all my panels-pages).

But enabling page_manager leads to wsod again.

Drush throughs out this error:

with message 'The "page_variant" entity type does not exist.' in
/var/www/interprace_cz/core/lib/Drupal/Core/Entity/EntityTypeManager.php:133...

I tried different 4.x-dev-versions.

There are a lot of discussions about the annoying issue with panels update, but I can´t find anything especially for page manager.

anybody out here to help me out?
