Implementing this module alongside Entity Reference Multiple → I was unable to get the display title to show. Despite using a custom theme the markup had already been generated using the default entity label.
As the field name is hard-coded add the following hooks to enable the use of the display title everywhere:
hook_entity_info_alter()
custom callback_entity_info_label()
