I guess the correct solution would be to have a dependency on https://www.drupal.org/project/key → module and save the key there? Maybe optionally?
You may have a look at related modules and how they solve it.
It would be really nice if there was a way to configure API key settings so that the key doesn't get exported into Features. It kind of defeats the purposes in my mind if the key gets written to potentially non-secure environments. Maybe there's a way to do this that I'm not aware of? I think it would be really useful and would provided ease-of-mind.
