In D7, we have marked the legacy icons (shipped as image files with PM) as deprecated, instead focussing on integration with fontawesome, which gives more modern icons in scalable vector formats.
We need to decide whether to remove the legacy icons for D8 or to continue supporting them.
My 2c is that whilst the fontawesome integration is much better, and the future, we need the legacy icons whilst it is not possible to package the fontawesome library on drupal.org. Therefore, we should keep the legacy icons into D8 as well, but continue to show the fontawesome icons by preference when the module and library are installed.

Revisiting this again, am open for suggestions.
Fontawesome provides icons, but they still dont' ship with any "Project Management" specific icons. Hence it is not really a good solution for this project to be honest.
Alternatives would be to fall back to shipping icons along with this project. We can make sure these icons are in svg format. We can also make these icons swappable at theme layer in case anybody is interested in alternate branding.
