A few months ago #1467712: Make it possible to disable fieldset for date field → was committed.
This means that we could set our date fields to be normal fields now through a checkbox in the field settings, and I presume we could set the setting on installing thhe fields programmatically too.
I think we should do this for any instances that use a single date field (not from/too), and maybe for others but that might need more testing to make sure it looks better.
