Make wrapped elements configurable by user

A regular use case is to have icons inside a span on top of a picture to create an overlay effect when hovering. But linked field doesn't allow for the span or icon to be linked since there is no text inside of it. I think it would be a nice addon feature to allow the user to define which elements have to get wrapped inside of a link. This gives the user a lot more control over what gets linked.

The ideal solution for myself would be that no text gets wrapped automatically. But you have the option to define css selectors for extra elements to be wrapped inside a link.

Please let me know what you think. I'm willing to write a patch for this if you are okey with such a change. If so maybe it should become version 2.x because otherwise older sites might lose links.
