I built a Drupal 8 version based on JCrop

Any interest in picking that up?

It does not alter the image itself, but introduces a new widget for image fields and an image style using the input to create a cropped version.

For anyone else looking for how you could achieve image cropping in Drupal 9 or 10, and especially if you need to migrate the content data for cropped images from imagefield_crop in Drupal 7 to Image Widget Crop → , I've written up an overview of what I found necessary at #3238966-3: Roadmap for Drupal 9 → .

I don't think we need both these issues open, so I'm closing this one as the duplicate; I hope that's OK.
