Images that are part of a gallery on wordpress appear as the following in the exported XML file.
[gallery columns="6" ids="6336,3451,6407,5245,5801,6408" orderby="rand"]
None of the images associated with this [gallery ...] tag appear on the final imported content. In fact, when looking at the HTML source after the import into Drupal, all [gallery ...] tags are missing.
Images that are not part of galleries are imported and appear just fine on the final drupal node content page.
