Views feed with only subscribed messages

Hi,

I am using message stack without creating custom modules and cannot get a filtered view of just the messages of the users subscribed to Nodes:

• I used rules to create messages successfully
• I created a message view to display messages (showing all messages, unflitered, is not an issue)
• my flag subscribe_ and email_ are enabled and working and I have subscribed to some test nodes

How do I get views to display messages of nodes I have subscribed to?
I added to Relationships:

• Entity Reference: Node reference
• (Content entity referenced from field_node_ref) Flags: subscribe_node (by current user)

and that seems to help. However:

1. Is this the way I am "supposed" to be doing this (e.g. why do I need a subscribe_ flag from the subscription module to do this)?
2. I can't get my "create comment" event messages to display for the subscribed to node. My "create comment" event messages include both field_node_ref and field_comment_ref fields for views to use. Do I need to create an additional comments flag: "subscribe_comment" and have user subscribe to both?? If so, what events do subscribing to a node alone provide -- just that someone updated the node itself?
