Wordpress renders ^M linebreaks as <p> tags, Drupal doesn't

In my XML source, for many posts there are no internal <p> tags. Instead there are just linebreaks (^M). On the Wordpress site these posts are rendered with <p> tags per paragraph. When we import though, we ignore them and end up with no paragraph breaks at all.
