XHTML validation fails due to autocomplete="off" attribute

We have a lot of sites using the XHTML doctypes rather than HTML5 (there are legal, religious, and even practical reasons for this!). In XHTML, elements don't have the autocomplete attribute, so our sites fail validation at the W3C when honeypot is enabled.

For example, government sites with Section 508 requirements need validation to pass, so we have to disable honeypot on those sites. Would it be possible to make the HTML5 features optional for us cavemen? Thanks!
