Hook for showing a message instead of the field?

Is there a hook I can use in a custom module to show a little message to people who don't have permissions to view a field?

I'd like to add a field in the field-configuration process that lets my client add a message like:

"Only Gold-level clients can see this field. Click here to upgrade."

Any pointers would be GREATLY appreciated!
