If I'm not mistaken, message_ui_message_arguments() only counts arguments of the form "!{my_token}". Therefore arguments such as !groups (as used in message_og_example) will always be deleted from old messages if tokens are being updated. Am I correct? This would be a shame as I find these tokerns invaluable.
